Bird Feeder Size Guide: From Budgies to Macaws

By Russell Neale, Founder, Seed Cube 2 min read

TL;DR

  • Small Seed Cube suits budgies, cockatiels and conures; Large suits eclectus, amazons, galahs, cockatoos and macaws.
  • Rule of thumb: under about 250 g takes the Small, 250 g and over takes the Large.
  • One feeder per pair of small birds, one per large bird.
  • Both sizes share the same premium acrylic, stainless perch and Talon-Hooks.

Quick answer

Match the Seed Cube to your bird. The Small suits budgies, cockatiels and conures; the Large suits eclectus, amazons, galahs, cockatoos and macaws. As a rule of thumb, birds under about 250 grams take the Small and birds 250 grams and over take the Large. Use one feeder per pair of small birds, or one per large bird, and confirm the fit with the Bird Finder.

Why feeder size matters

  • A natural posture helps joint comfort and reduces feather wear.
  • The right perch height lowers spills and keeps chop inside the feeder.
  • Matching Cube size to species supports calm, efficient feeding.

What both Seed Cubes share

  • Thicker UV-stable acrylic walls for durability and clarity.
  • A knurled stainless perch and a covered opening that contains husks.
  • Mount inside or outside the cage with Talon-Hooks for a secure, chew-resistant fit.
  • An optional Easy-Tray that slots in to catch mess, then lifts out for a quick rinse.

Small Seed Cube: budgies, cockatiels and conures

A compact footprint without compromise. The Small keeps small parrots relaxed while containing scatter, which makes it ideal for apartments and smaller cages. A common setup is one Small per pair of budgies.

For singles or pairs of cockatiels and conures, one Small is usually right. Four budgies use two Small Cubes.

Large Seed Cube: eclectus to macaws

The Large gives bigger parrots room to turn and feed naturally. It is macaw-safe and the largest acrylic no-mess feeder on the market. For medium to large parrots like eclectus, amazons, galahs and cockatoos, choose the Large, one per bird.

How to pick the right size

  1. Check your bird's weight. As a rule of thumb, birds 250 g and over suit the Large; under 250 g suits the Small.
  2. Cross-check by species. Budgies, cockatiels and conures take the Small; eclectus, amazons, galahs, cockatoos and macaws take the Large.
  3. Decide on extras. Add a matching Easy-Tray if you want simpler clean-up.

Is Small a compromise? No. The Small uses the same acrylic, stainless perch and Talon-Hooks as the Large, and supports the same natural feeding posture. Choose on species fit, not status.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Small Seed Cube suitable for budgies?

Yes. The Small is designed for budgies and also fits cockatiels and conures. Use one Small per pair of small birds for the calmest feeding routine.

Does the Small Seed Cube use the same hooks as the Large?

Yes. Both sizes mount with stainless Talon-Hooks for a stable, chew-resistant fit inside or outside the cage.

Where should I mount the feeder?

Mount it at an accessible height inside the cage, or align it with an external cage door if mounting outside, so your bird can reach it easily and you can refill without hassle.

Can I run mixed species on one feeder?

For mixed species, use one feeder per pair and match the feeder to the smallest species. Position feeders so every bird has easy access.

Is the Large Seed Cube safe for macaws?

Yes. The Large is macaw-safe and the biggest acrylic no-mess feeder available. Use one Large per macaw for space to turn and feed naturally.

What if my bird is a messy eater?

Add an Easy-Tray that matches your Cube size. It is a removable tray insert that slots inside the Seed Cube and catches husks and fresh foods, then lifts out for a quick rinse.

Russell Neale
Founder, Seed Cube

Russell Neale is the founder of Seed Cube, a bird-feeding brand he started in 2024 in the Hills District of NSW. A long-time bird owner himself, with three birds including a 12-year-old hand-raised Alexandrine, Russell built Seed Cube after years of frustration with messy, flimsy and poorly designed feeders.

Seed Cube makes practical, durable products that keep feeding cleaner, easier and safer for pet birds, and that are designed to last rather than end up in landfill. The brand works closely with Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, and everything it makes is BUILT FOR BIRDS™.

Size is about fit, not status. Match the Cube to your bird's weight and species, use one per pair of small birds or one per large bird, and add an Easy-Tray if your bird is a messy eater. The Bird Finder confirms the right size in seconds.
