How to Clean Your Seed Cube and Keep the Acrylic Clear

By Russell Neale, Founder, Seed Cube 2 min read

TL;DR

  • Clean the Seed Cube with mild dish soap, lukewarm water and a soft microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid ammonia or solvent glass cleaners, abrasive cloths, hot water and the dishwasher.
  • Empty and wipe daily, full wash weekly, deeper clean if you feed wet foods.
  • An Easy-Tray makes the daily clean a quick slide-out rinse.

Quick answer

To clean a Seed Cube without clouding the acrylic, use mild dish soap, lukewarm water and a soft microfibre cloth. Empty the husks, wash the walls, perch and opening, rinse well and dry fully before refilling. Avoid ammonia or solvent-based glass cleaners, abrasive cloths and scourers, hot water and the dishwasher, all of which scratch or warp acrylic. Wipe daily, full wash weekly, and clean more often if you feed wet foods.

A two-minute routine keeps the acrylic clear for years.

Why acrylic needs the right routine

The Seed Cube is made from thick, food-safe acrylic. It is clear, strong and easy to live with, but acrylic scratches and clouds more easily than glass if you clean it the wrong way. Harsh cleaners and abrasive cloths leave fine scratches that build into a permanent haze.

The good news: keeping it clear is simple. A gentle routine takes a couple of minutes and keeps the acrylic looking new for years.

What to avoid

Three things cause almost all acrylic damage:

  • Harsh chemicals. Ammonia and solvent-based glass cleaners can craze and cloud acrylic and degrade the UV-set glues. Skip them.
  • Abrasive cloths and scourers. Paper towel, scourers and rough sponges leave micro-scratches. Use a soft microfibre cloth.
  • Hot water. High heat can stress and warp acrylic. Use lukewarm or cool water only.

The simple weekly clean

  1. Empty it. Tip out old husks and seed. If you run an Easy-Tray, slide it out first.
  2. Wash. Use lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth. Wipe the inside walls, perch and opening.
  3. Rinse. Rinse thoroughly with clean lukewarm water so no soap residue is left.
  4. Dry. Pat dry with a soft cloth, or let it air-dry fully before refilling. Refilling damp invites mould.

Day to day, a quick wipe and an Easy-Tray rinse keeps things fresh between full washes.

Keep it clear for years

A few habits keep the acrylic clear and the feeder safe:

  • Always dry with a soft cloth to avoid water spots.
  • Keep it out of direct high heat and harsh sunlight when cleaning.
  • Do a deeper clean periodically, more often if you feed wet foods or chop.
  • Check the Talon-Hooks and fittings are tight when you refit it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the Seed Cube in the dishwasher?

No. Dishwasher heat can warp and stress the acrylic. Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild dish soap.

What cleaner is safe for acrylic?

Mild dish soap and lukewarm water, or a Perspex-approved cleaner. Avoid ammonia or solvent-based glass cleaners, which can cloud acrylic.

Why has my acrylic gone cloudy?

Usually fine scratches from abrasive cloths or harsh cleaners. Switch to a soft microfibre cloth and a mild cleaner to prevent further hazing.

How often should I clean it?

Empty husks and wipe daily, do a full wash weekly, and a deeper clean periodically. Clean more often if you feed wet foods or chop.

Can I use disinfectant?

Use a bird-safe cleaner, rinse thoroughly and dry fully before refilling. Avoid harsh chemicals around birds.

Founder, Seed Cube

Russell Neale is the founder of Seed Cube, a bird-feeding brand he started in 2024 in the Hills District of NSW. A long-time bird owner himself, with three birds including a 12-year-old hand-raised Alexandrine, Russell built Seed Cube after years of frustration with messy, flimsy and poorly designed feeders.

Seed Cube makes practical, durable products that keep feeding cleaner, easier and safer for pet birds, and that are designed to last rather than end up in landfill. The brand works closely with Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, and everything it makes is BUILT FOR BIRDS™.

Clear acrylic comes down to gentle cleaning: mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft cloth, never harsh chemicals, abrasives or heat. Keep up a quick daily wipe and a weekly wash, run an Easy-Tray to speed it up, and the Seed Cube stays clear and hygienic for years.
