What's the difference between Macaw Nuts and South American Mix?
Both are formulated for large and South American parrots, but Macaw Nuts has a larger pellet size and more visible whole nuts (peanuts and almonds). Macaw Nuts is better for very large birds (600g+) and provides enhanced breeding support with higher fat. South American Mix suits medium-large birds (100g-800g).
Why does Macaw Nuts include peanuts and almonds?
The visible whole nuts stimulate natural foraging behaviour and appeal to exotic parrots' preference for high-fat foods. In the wild, macaws eat nuts naturally; Macaw Nuts replicates this dietary preference while maintaining complete nutritional balance.
Is Macaw Nuts suitable for African greys?
Yes. Macaw Nuts is suitable for large African greys, cockatoos and other large parrots over 600g. While developed for macaws, the nutritional profile supports all large parrot species including Amazons and large cockatoos.
Can I feed Macaw Nuts to a breeder bird?
Yes. Macaw Nuts is specifically designed to support breeding birds with increased fatty acids, protein, vitamins and calcium for egg production and chick growth. It provides excellent nutritional support throughout breeding cycles.
Do I need to add supplements to Macaw Nuts?
No. Macaw Nuts is a complete diet. When fed at 80% of your bird's diet alongside fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts, no additional supplements are necessary unless your vet recommends them for a specific health condition.
Can my macaw eat this instead of South American Mix?
Yes. Macaw Nuts is the premium option for large parrots and macaws specifically. It has larger pellets, more visible nuts, and stronger breeding support. If your macaw is over 600g and you want maximum feeding enrichment, Macaw Nuts is the better choice.
