What's the difference between Maintenance Diet and Parrot Essentials?
Maintenance Diet is Vetafarm's original formula with no added fruit or nuts; it focuses on core nutrition for year-round health. Parrot Essentials includes 5% fruit and 5% nuts blended through the pellets for added variety and enrichment. Both are complete diets; choose based on whether your bird needs extra variety.
Is Maintenance Diet suitable for breeding birds?
Maintenance Diet is designed for non-breeding periods. During breeding season, switch to Vetafarm Breeder Pellets which contain increased protein, calcium and amino acids to support egg production and chick development. Consult your avian vet for breeding nutrition guidance.
Why does my bird need fresh water when switching to pellets?
Pellet diets are drier than seed-based diets. Birds transitioning to pellets often drink more water initially as they adjust. Always provide clean, fresh water daily to support healthy digestion and hydration.
Will Maintenance Diet help prevent health issues in my parrot?
Yes. Maintenance Diet eliminates the nutritional imbalances and waste associated with seed diets, which can lead to hepatic lipidosis, cardiac disease, iron storage disease and other deficiencies. A balanced pellet diet supports long-term health and healthy weight.
Can I use this for all parrot sizes?
Yes. Maintenance Diet is suitable for all parrot species from small cockatiels to large macaws. Adjust daily portions based on your bird's body weight (approximately 10% of body weight per day). The same formula works for all sizes.
