Why do lorikeets need a special diet?
Lorikeets and lories have naturally nectar-based diets that differ from seed-eating parrots. Nectar Pellets replicate this nutritional profile with a low-sugar formula (unlike traditional nectar mixes) while providing complete balanced nutrition. This reduces nutritional deficiencies and health issues.
How does psyllium husk help?
Psyllium husk is a natural soluble fibre that improves digestive health and gut function. It also firms up lorikeet droppings, which are notoriously messy. Firmer droppings mean less cleaning and a healthier bird, particularly important for indoor companions.
Are Nectar Pellets low in sugar?
Yes. Nectar Pellets contain significantly less sugar than traditional nectar mixes and liquid diets. This reduces obesity, diabetes and liver disease—common issues in lorikeets fed high-sugar diets. They're formulated for long-term health without nutritional compromise.
Can I feed only Nectar Pellets?
No. Feed as 80% of diet with fresh fruits and vegetables (15%) and treats like nectar mixes (5%). Lorikeets need dietary variety and some fresh nectar options for enrichment, but Nectar Pellets provide the nutritional foundation.
Will my lorikeet accept Nectar Pellets?
Nectar Pellets are apple-flavoured to encourage acceptance. If your lorikeet is used to liquid nectar, transition gradually by mixing pellets with nectar initially, then reducing nectar ratio over several weeks until your bird accepts pellets fully.
Do these pellets replace all nectar?
Pellets replace liquid nectar as the primary diet but birds can still enjoy fresh fruit and occasional nectar treats as part of the 20% enrichment portion. This balance prevents nutritional deficiencies while maintaining natural foraging and feeding behaviours.
