Why is South American Mix different from Parrot Essentials?
South American Mix contains higher protein (19% vs 17%) and higher fat (7% vs 5%) specifically formulated for South American parrots like macaws, amazons and conures. These species have naturally high-fat diets in the wild. South American Mix replicates this with almonds and peanuts.
Can I use this for birds other than South American species?
South American Mix is species-specific but suitable for many parrot types including African greys, eclectus, caiques and others. It works as a complete diet for all these birds, though South American species will benefit most from the higher fat and nut content.
How do I convert my bird to South American Mix if they eat seeds?
Mix 50% seed and 50% pellets with a small amount of hot water to form a sticky mixture. Place in the bowl and allow your bird to pick through it. Gradually increase pellet ratio over several days until your bird accepts it fully.
Is this diet suitable for breeding?
Yes. South American Mix is formulated with increased calcium, vitamins and fatty acids to support egg production, young bird growth and breeding success. It provides balanced nutrition for year-round maintenance and breeding cycles.
Can I use Deli Stix with this diet?
Yes. Vetafarm Deli Stix can be added as part of the 5% treat allowance for extra enrichment. Combine with fresh nuts and occasional treats to make up the remaining 20% of daily diet.
