  • All parrot species (cockatiels, conures, budgies, ringnecks, galahs, cockatoos, macaws, African greys)
  • Suitable for pet birds and breeders
  • Ideal for bird owners wanting sustained flavor variety without advanced portion control
  • Dual-use: humans and birds (red cabbage for salads, mizuna for delicate garnishes and bowls)
  • 6x compostable jute grow mats (100% plant-based fibre, fully compostable)
  • 3x Red Cabbage seed packets (untreated, non-GMO, approximately 1,000 seeds per packet)
  • 3x Mizuna seed packets (untreated, non-GMO, approximately 1,000 seeds per packet)
  • No additional soil or chemicals needed
  • Everything needed for six complete growing cycles with equal variety rotation
  • Sow: Spread seeds evenly across moistened jute mat, cover lightly with another mat
  • Water: Mist daily with water bottle or spray; keep mat moist but not waterlogged
  • Light: Place on windowsill or under grow light; 12-16 hours daily ideal
  • Temperature: Optimal 18-24°C; below 12°C growth stalls, above 25°C seeds may cook
  • Harvest: 8-12 days for both varieties depending on temperature and light
  • Cut just above mat surface with scissors or Micropod Micro Snips
  • For birds: Offer 1-2 tsp for small birds, 1-2 Tbsp for medium parrots, 2-4 Tbsp for large parrots
  • Alternate between red cabbage and mizuna daily or across the week for maximum flavor diversity
  • Offer 2-3 times per week as part of brassica rotation with non-brassicas (pea, sunflower, wheatgrass)
  • Store harvested microgreens dry and unwashed in vented containers with paper towel
  • Rinse just before serving; remove leftovers after 2 hours
Harvest timeline: 8-12 days for both red cabbage and mizuna. After harvest, store microgreens dry and unwashed in vented containers with paper towel; rinse just before serving. Remove uneaten portions after 2 hours. Used mats are fully compostable; throw into garden or compost bin.
Note: Red cabbage pigments may temporarily tint droppings purple. This is harmless and normal.

Which variety should I offer first?
Either works. Red cabbage is mildly sweet and earthy; mizuna is mildly peppery with slight spice. Most birds accept both readily. Start with whichever appeals to you first, then alternate to keep meals interesting. The equal split (3:3) lets you pace variety your way.

Can I grow both varieties on the same mat?
No. Each variety needs its own mat for best results. Growing separately gives you better harvest control and lets you alternate varieties through the week. The 3:3 kit is designed for this rotation.

What does red cabbage do to droppings?
Red cabbage contains anthocyanins (purple pigments) that pass through your bird's digestive system intact. Droppings may turn purplish temporarily. This is harmless and completely normal. It stops once you stop feeding red cabbage for a few days.

Is this safer than the Build & Balance Mix?
Yes. Shield & Shine uses two brassicas that are milder and more widely accepted. Both red cabbage and mizuna are gentler than mustard. No advanced portion control or gradual introduction needed. Most birds accept both readily, making this better for first-time variety growers.

How do I rotate these with other vegetables?
Offer Shield & Shine 2-3 times per week maximum (both varieties are brassicas). On other days, feed non-brassica vegetables like pea shoots, sunflower, wheatgrass, carrot, cucumber, or leafy greens. This rotation prevents nutrient imbalances. Always ensure base diet includes quality pellets with iodine.

Can I use this for budgies and small birds?
Yes. Unlike mustard mixes, this is safe for all bird sizes including budgies. The varieties are mild enough for small birds and sensitive to iodine metabolism. Monitor your budgie's response as you would with any new vegetable, but brassica sensitivity is lower with these two varieties.

Why pair red cabbage with mizuna specifically?
Red cabbage delivers anthocyanins (antioxidants with immune benefits) while mizuna provides carotenoids and a contrasting peppery flavour. Together they create complementary nutrition and flavor profiles that prevent boredom. The vibrant purple and green also makes chop more visually appealing.

How long do harvested microgreens last?
Best used within 24 hours of harvest. Store dry and unwashed in vented containers with paper towel in the fridge. Rinse just before serving. Remove any leftovers after 2 hours because microgreens wilt quickly once exposed to air and moisture.

Why Choose Microgreens For Your Birds

Homegrown microgreens are rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that support feather health, digestion, and energy. Grown fresh in your own kitchen, they add colour, crunch, and hydration to daily chop while encouraging natural foraging. With soft stems and leaves that even small birds accept, Micropod makes it simple to rotate fresh greens through the week for balance and variety.

Clean, Soil-Free Growing

Micropod uses natural grow mats instead of soil, keeping benches, windowsills, and cage areas neat. No dirt, no mess, just clean, fresh greens ready for your bird’s diet.

Fast and Reliable Harvests

Nutritious and Bird-Friendly

Tender stems and leaves are easy for birds to accept, from budgies through to cockatoos. They bring natural texture and hydration to chop while supporting overall health.

Compact and Easy to Grow

With its small footprint, Micropod fits on a sunny sill or kitchen bench. No special lights or equipment required, just water and natural light.
