What's the difference between mizuna and mustard?
Mizuna is a Japanese mustard green. It's milder and more tender than the strong mustard variety we offer. Think of mizuna as the gentle introduction to peppery greens, while mustard is the bold kick. Mizuna is safer for all bird sizes and works well in regular rotation without advanced portion control.
Is mizuna safe for budgies and small birds?
Yes. Mizuna is mild enough for budgies, cockatiels, and small conures. The peppery flavour is subtle, not overwhelming. It's a brassica, so rotate it with non-brassicas throughout the week, but there's no special caution needed for small birds like there is with mustard.
How does mizuna compare to pak choi?
Pak choi is milder and fresher tasting. Mizuna has a gentle peppery kick. Both are brassicas and safe for all birds. Choose pak choi if your bird prefers mild flavours. Choose mizuna if your bird is ready for a bit more complexity without the intensity of mustard.
Can I offer mizuna alongside pak choi?
Yes. Both are mild brassicas. You could offer pak choi one day and mizuna the next as part of your brassica rotation. Or mix them together for flavour contrast. Both work well in the same weekly rotation without worrying about advanced portion control.
How often should I offer mizuna?
A few times per week as part of brassica rotation. Mizuna is mild, so you can offer it regularly alongside other brassicas like pak choi. But still rotate with non-brassicas (pea, sunflower, wheatgrass, carrot, cucumber) throughout the week. Always ensure base diet includes quality pellets with iodine.
What makes mizuna good for human cooking?
Mizuna's mild peppery heat and ultra-tender texture make it perfect for sushi bowls, sashimi plates, pasta garnishes, soups, and pizza toppings. It's a restaurant-quality microgreen. Same kit, same harvest, both you and your bird enjoy it.
Is mizuna a complete vegetable source for my bird?
No. Mizuna is one variety in a rotation. Your bird needs a mix of different vegetables across the week plus quality pellets as the base diet. Use mizuna as part of a balanced program, not as the only vegetable.
How do I know mizuna is ready to harvest?
Harvest when microgreens reach the tender stage with delicate leaves fully formed, typically 8-12 days. The leaves should be very fine and soft. Don't wait for them to grow tall; young microgreens have better flavour and nutrition. A quick snip with scissors or Micro Snips just above the mat does the job.
