Why is mustard marked as advanced/experienced only?
Mustard microgreens contain natural compounds (glucosinolates) found in all brassicas. When used carefully and rotated with other vegetables, they're safe. But they require portion control and shouldn't be a primary vegetable source, especially for budgies or birds with thyroid sensitivities. Think of them like hot sauce for birds a flavour accent, not a staple.
Are these safe for my budgie?
Not recommended. Budgies are small and sensitive to brassica compounds. If you want microgreens for budgies, choose milder options like pea shoots or sunflower from the Micropod range. Stick to mustard only with medium to large parrots, and always rotate with non-brassicas.
How do I know when to harvest?
Harvest when the first true leaves (the second set of leaves above the initial sprouts) appear. This is typically 8-12 days. Don't wait for the microgreens to get tall; tender young growth has better flavour and nutrition. Scissors or Micro Snips work best, cut just above the mat.
Can I use my own mustard seeds?
Yes. Micropod mats work with any untreated seeds. If using your own, ensure they're untreated and non-GMO. Follow the same sowing and watering instructions. Each mat works for one harvest cycle only.
What's the difference between mustard and milder varieties like pea shoots?
Mustard has a bold, peppery, slightly bitter flavour that creates distinct sensory stimulation. Pea shoots are sweet and mild. For first-time growers or smaller birds, start with pea shoots or sunflower. Mustard is best for experienced owners wanting to expand their birds' flavour palette and provide behavioral enrichment through different tastes.
How often can I offer mustard microgreens?
Maximum 2-3 times per week as part of a brassica rotation. On the other days, offer non-brassica vegetables like pea shoots, sunflower, wheatgrass, or regular leafy greens. This rotation prevents nutrient imbalances and thyroid issues. Always ensure your bird's base diet includes quality pellets with iodine.
Can I grow multiple mats at once to have continuous harvests?
Yes. The Micropod Continuous Grow Kit with four trays is designed for staggered growing. Sow mats 2-3 days apart so harvests roll continuously. The Mustard kit provides six mats, so you can run two-three growing cycles before reordering.
