Is pak choi safe for all birds?
Yes. Pak choi is the mildest brassica variety we offer. It's safe for budgies, cockatiels, small conures, and all larger parrots. The soft texture and gentle flavour make it ideal for birds new to fresh microgreens or those with sensitive palates. It's a beginner-friendly choice.
My bird is a picky eater. Will pak choi work?
Probably. Pak choi is the gentlest option in the Micropod range. The ultra-soft leaves and mild taste encourage acceptance from cautious birds. Mix small amounts into regular chop first. Most birds accept pak choi readily because there's nothing sharp or overwhelming about the flavour.
Can I grow pak choi year-round indoors?
Yes. Micropod's hydroponic system works indoors all year. Keep temperature between 18-24°C for optimal growth. Below 12°C, seeds struggle to germinate. Above 25°C, they may cook. A windowsill in most climates works fine; in winter or shaded areas, use a grow light to ensure 12-16 hours of light daily.
How often should I offer pak choi?
A few times per week as part of brassica rotation. It's mild enough to offer regularly, but diversity matters. Alternate pak choi with non-brassicas like pea shoots, sunflower, wheatgrass, carrot, or cucumber throughout the week. Always ensure your bird's base diet includes quality pellets with iodine.
What makes pak choi different from the Shield & Shine Mix?
Shield & Shine pairs red cabbage with mizuna for color and flavour contrast. Pak choi is a single, pure mild variety. Choose pak choi if you want simplicity and beginner-friendly introduction. Choose Shield & Shine if you're ready for more flavor variety in one kit.
Can I use pak choi if my bird is on a restricted diet?
Check with your avian vet. Pak choi is a brassica and contains goitrogens (compounds that may affect iodine absorption). Birds on complete pellet diets with iodine are fine. But if your bird has thyroid concerns or is on a restricted diet, verify with your vet before introducing any brassicas.
How do I know pak choi is ready to harvest?
Harvest when the first true leaves appear and microgreens reach about 1-2 inches tall. This is typically 8-12 days. The leaves should be tender and soft. Don't wait for them to grow taller; young microgreens have better flavour and nutrition. A quick snip with scissors or Micro Snips just above the mat does the job.
Can my family eat these microgreens too?
Yes. Pak choi microgreens are delicate and perfect for Asian-inspired dishes, stir-fries, and salads. They're mild and tender, making them suitable for family cooking. Same growing method, same safe seeds. Your household shares the harvest.
